Millions of women each year are affected by vaginitis infections, and they are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). STI rates continue to be on the rise in the U.S. and the impact of STIs can be detrimental to women’s health. Accurate clinical diagnosis of vaginitis and STIs can help reverse this trend. Watch Dr. Arlene Seña, and Dr. Jane Schwebke in a discussion on STI co-infections and vaginitis. The discussion will review recently published literature and study data that highlights STI distribution among women with symptoms of vaginitis, single and multiple infection rates in women with vaginitis, and STI prevalence of women with clinician and lab diagnosed bacterial vaginosis. The impact of misdiagnosis will be examined as well as the accuracy of vaginitis diagnosis with molecular diagnostics. Learn about Dr. Arlene Seña and Dr. Jane Schwebke. In observance of Sexual Health Month, the Infectious Disease Society of America Foundation (IDSAF) hosted a webinar to a discuss Mycoplasma genitalium (M. gen) – the next installment in their Dr. John G. Bartlett Memorial Education Series. Two specialists in the areas of infectious diseases and obstetrics and gynecology explored the various aspects of M. gen, including its epidemiology, testing methods and treatment options. Our experts provided valuable insights into M. gen, its health implications and the measures we can take to address this under-recognized STI. Learning Objectives: Explore the impact of M. gen on sexual health. Assess the epidemiology of M. gen and identify individuals who are at a higher risk of contracting the infection and complications associated with untreated M. gen infections. Examine the testing methods currently available for the detection of M. gen. Describe the treatment options that exist for M. gen infections and investigate the emergence of drug-resistant strains of M. gen and its implications. Review preventive measures and safe sexual practices that individuals can adopt to reduce the risk of M. gen infections.
