Diagnosis of AUB requires a systematic approach that is driven by a thorough menstrual and medical history, a targeted physical examination and appropriate laboratory testing, and evaluation of the endometrial cavity by one or more uterine imaging techniques. This module describes the essential elements of a workup of chronic AUB, including the importance of the menstrual history, the use of diagnostic imaging and additional testing, and how the FIGO systems for description of menstrual symptoms and classification of the potential causes of chronic AUB facilitate the investigation and, ultimately, the development of an individualized menu of therapeutic options. The intended audience for this learning module is physicians and medical residents in Ob/Gyn or family practice settings. Author: Malcolm G.
