Microbial Pathogens in Vaginitis: The Good, the Bad, and the Anaerobic

During this presentation, Dr. Salika Shakir, PhD D(ABMM), will discuss vaginitis, a leading reason for OB/GYN visits.1,2 Upon completion of this program, attendees will be able to:

  • Define vaginitis and its associated health consequences
  • Describe the common causes of vaginitis including bacterial vaginosis, candida vaginitis and Trichomonas vaginalis
  • Compare the typical methods for diagnosing vaginitis including wet prep, Amsel, gram stain with Nugent, direct probe, yeast culture and nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT)
  • Explain the reasons for using NAAT to diagnose vaginitis
  • Outline the treatment options for the common causes of vaginitis
